What is Classical Yoga by Donation? Yoga and the teachings of liberation are priceless. They have been passed down from teacher to student for thousands of years without charge. In this spirit, all of the classes at Dharma Yoga Brooklyn are offered solely by donation. It is left to each student to decide what to give in exchange for class. This helps to keep the classes affordable for students of varying financial situations. It is also a practice in itself of re-evaluating our relationship to the economic system: with no mandatory fee it is at the students discretion to assign value to the programs and take it on themselves to decide what is "their money's worth".
How does DYB keep it's doors open? You! We rely exclusively on the generosity of the community to support the operational expenses of the center and its teachers. We are also still paying off our renovation costs a little at a time. "Yoga by Donation" does not mean free-- without your support, our door cannot stay open.
What is the average donation students give per class? There is a huge range of what students donate per class. We receive anywhere from $5 to $20, sometimes more, sometimes less.
Are there other ways to support DYB? Yes! If you have any ideas for ways you would like to support us, let us know! You can also help us get the word out. We rarely have time to put flyers up in the neighborhood, or anywhere else. You are always welcome to take flyers/postcards and put them around the area.
What is the philosophy behind donation based teaching? Dāna (Pāli, Sanskrit: दान dāna) is generosity, giving. or the giving of oneself. In Buddhism, it is also the practice of cultivating generosity. Ultimately, the practice culminates in one of the ten perfections (pāramitā): the perfection of giving (dāna-pāramitā). In Buddhism, these virtues are cultivated as a way of purification, purifying karma and helping the aspirant to live an unobstructed life, while reaching the goal of enlightenment. Dāna can be characterized by unattached and unconditional generosity, giving and letting go.
